Concerned over the likelihood of the carnival parade route being shifted to the new venue at the old market, a special meeting of the Margao municipal council (MMC) has been convened on Friday.
The single-point agenda of the meeting is to adopt a resolution urging the district administration not to change the present route-Holy Spirit church to MMC square.
Significantly, the MMC itself adopted a resolution in February 2010 to shift the parade venue to the old market-Ravindra Bhavan route via the district court, with a view to decongest traffic and to address security concerns.
However, MMC is now seeking status quo on the route on grounds that the road dividers from Colva circle to Ravindra Bhavan will affect the parade’s smooth flow. At least, that’s what the note circulated to councillors to intimate them about Friday’s special meeting states.
District collector G P Naik when contacted said road dividers were not a valid reason to reject a route. “We will not be able to hold the parade along the new route this year as work on the culvert across Colva circle-Ravindra Bhavan road is in progress. However, once the work is completed, all parades-carnival, shigmo, Narkasur-will be along this route. The road is wide enough. One lane can be used for the parade and the other to erect spectators’ stands. The road dividers will pose no hindrance to the parade’s movement,” Naik said.
Sources said the state plans to acquire 6,000 sq m near SGPDA grounds. Once done, floats can be lined up on the 20,000 sq m area, while Ravindra Bhavan can host stage programmes. tnn
