Valanka alleges GVP Benaulim MLA has dual citizenship

Defeated Congress candidate Valanka Alemao has filed an election petition before the high court of Bombay at Goa challenging Goa Vikas Party (GVP) MLA Caetano (Caitu) D’Silva’s election to the Goa assembly, alleging that he holds dual citizenship.

The petitioner has prayed for the disqualification of the Benaulim MLA on the ground that D’Silva had acquired a Portuguese passport and had now allegedly attained citizenship of that country.

Valanka, who was a Congress party nominee, garnered 7,694 votes, D’Silva’s polled 9,695 votes, while John Fernandes third – bagging only 1,277 votes.

Valanka has prayed that the election be invalidated, because D’Silva has ceased to be an Indian citizen after acquiring the citizenship of Portugal.

All four members of the Alemao clan, including Churchill, his brother Joaquim Alemao and his son Yuri Alemao were defeated in the March 3 elections.
