By-elections for the Valpoi Assembly constituency will be held on October 18 according to an announcement by the Election Commission of India. While the notification will be will be issued on 22nd September, the last date for filing nominations is 29th September.
Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on 1st October and the last date for withdrawal is 4th October. While polling will be held on 18th October, counting will be taken up on 21st October.
By-elections to this constituency were necessitated following the resignation of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane as an MLA after he joined the Indian National Congress in June this year.
At the last general elections, Vishwajit Rane was elected as an independent candidate from the constituency as he was denied a ticket by the Congress Party in keeping with its norm of not fielding two persons of the same family as candidates as his father Pratapsing Rane was the party candidate from neighbouring Poriem constituency.
Although the Congress had fielded a candidate in Valpoi, he withdrew at the last moment, making it easy for Vishwajit to get elected. Incidentally, Puttu Gaonkar who was the BJP candidate against Vishwajit at the last elections and had given him a spirited fight is now in the Congress camp.
Vishwajit who will be nominated by the Congress is expected to win quite easily even though the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that it will pull all the plugs to get its candidate elected.
