Vasco Rape Case: Hearing adjourned to Thursday

Judge Anuja Prabhudesai of the Children’s Court today adjourned to 21st February arguments on the petition filed by the father of the 7 year old Vasco rape victim seeking an F.I.R and immediate arrest of the alleged rapist and the school headmistress Sharlet Furtado, Class teacher Deesha Kavathankar along with the head clerk Brazina Godinho for destroying vital crucial evidence after his daughter was raped.

As directed by the Court the Crime Branch and the Mormugao Police today filed their replies to the petition filed by the victim’s father. Interestingly the Goa Government has appointed Senior Public Prosecutor Sarojini Sardinha as the Special Public Prosecutor to defend the police in the case.

Adv. Aires Rodrigues today told the Court that despite the victim being able to identify the photograph of the alleged rapist and his accomplice the police were dragging their feet in the investigation.

Crime Branch Police Inspector Sunita Sawant in her reply filed today has stated that the medical opinion given by GMC doctors has confirmed sexual intercourse and that sincere all out efforts are in progress to trace the identity of the person who committed this heinous and grave crime against the child. 

Adv. Aires Rodrigues however disputed the sincere efforts of the police and submitted to the Court that though over a month had elapsed the police have not even registered an FIR against the Headmistress, teacher and the head clerk who are very much around for offences of criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence after the rape. 

Adv. Rodrigues also told the Court that the police had not yet registered an F.I.R against the MPT official Suresh Shirwadkar for offering the victim’s father a bribe of Rs five lakhs to hush up the case.

Submitting that the police investigation was a sham and entirely ineffective, Adv. Rodrigues sought that the Court directs the police to expeditiously investigate the case and that the Court monitor the investigation so that the perpetrators of the heinous crime are speedily brought to justice.

The 7 year old girl was raped on 14th January around 10.30 am in the toilet of Deep Vihar School, in Sada at Vasco where she was studying in the second standard. The school is run by the Mormugao Port Trust. While the school staff washed away all the evidence, the police were informed only three hours after the rape. The victim received medical attention only eight hours after she was brutally raped while the girl was given counseling only 15 days after she was brutally raped.
