The Villagers of Velim at the Gram Sabha on Sunday while continuing their opposition to the proposed expansion of fishing jetty at Cutbona demanded that the local MLA and Inland Waterways Minister Philip Neri Rodrigues be asked to be present for the next gram sabha to clarify his stand on the issue.
The villagers on Sunday asked the Panchayat to write to the District Collector to immediately scrap the land acquisition proceedings currently underway.
Villagers have been opposing the land acquisition as for the first time the government sought to acquire land without specifying the purpose for which it is sought. There have been all kinds of explanations given such as ancillary services including a cold storage are sought to be constructed therein.
The villagers had earlier set on a dharna and the Philip Neri Rodrigues had promised to study the matter and get back to them. At the meeting on Sunday, the villagers expressed their anger over the fact that the MLA has not bothered to revert back to them as promised and hence demanded his presence at the next gram sabha.
The mismanagement of the sluice gates at Cutbona also featured at the gram sabha wherein farmers pointed out that the middle portion of the gate was deliberately kept open to allow saline water to enter the fields which are then rendered uncultivable.
It was finally decided that the sluice gates would be jointly inspected by Collector, Mamlatdar, Talathi and villager to work out a solution to the problem.
Various other issues like encroachment on the river in violation of the CRZ, garbage management, illegalities in the public distribution system were also discussed at the meeting.
