Residents of Velsao village were in a panic as the lake in the village overflowed causing mini flood in the village with roads getting waterlogged and submerging the house of a poor woman.
The mini-floods submerged the house of Isabela Fernandes who only had tears to express her predicament. Besides, flooding two other houses, the water also entered a gymnasium used by the local boys.
The situation was brought under control after Deputy Collector for Mormugao Taluka Levinson Martins rushed to the village with an official team and the Water Resources Department officials opened the sluice gates of the bandharas of the lake.
The lake was flooded following heavy rains over the last two days, however, the flooding could have been avoided if the local authorities including the Panchayat had to open the sluice gates earlier.
Levinson Martins has asked the local Panchayat to take adequate measures for proper control of flow of water and also to widen the canals wherever possible.
