Vijai Sardesai questions shortening of Mopa Airport runaway

Fatorda: Following the Air India Express flight crash while landing at the Kozhikode airport in Kerala, Goa Forward Party (GFP) has expressed concern over a decision taken to reduce the length of the runway at upcoming Mopa greenfield airport in the state.

In a tweet, former Deputy Chief Minister and Goa Forward Party (GFP) MLA Vijai Sardesai said,”Last night we had an devastating aircrash in Kerala as the aircraft supposedly overshot the runway. Shockingly our @GovtofGoa has in July this year resolved to reduce the length of the runway at the proposed Mopa Airport ! Goemkars can decide what is going on under present Govt!.”

To comply with the statutory operational standards as per the parameters of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the Goa cabinet in July this year decided to reduce from 3,750 to 3,500 metres.

Eighteen persons had died after an Air India Express flight carrying 190 passengers and crew members crashed after landing at the Kozhikode airport runway on August 7.
