The lobby of Brar, AICC General Secretary Sudhakar Reddy and the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat worked on a strategy to ensure that they make one last ditch effort to ensure Vijai Sardesai gets the Fatorda ticket and by virtue of this move Saifulla Khan gets the ticket in Mormugao.
The strategy was simple a note demanding that the current names are withdrawn and the new names of Sardesai and Khan be added to the list. This letter which was finalized by evening was sent to Oscar Fernandes who is expected to then take a decision on the note.
The note sent to Oscar Fernandes demanding the deletion of Sankalp and MK Shaikh; and inclusion of Vijai Sardesai and Saifulla Khan was signed first by Jagmeet Singh Brar, followed by Sudhakar Reddy, then the Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, then the former chief minister Pratapsingh Rane and GPCC president Subash Shirodkar.
When GoaChronicle.com spoke to one of the signatories of the note on being aware of the behind the scenes effort being put, this Goan politician confirmed, “The high command had finalized the names of Sankalp and MK Shaikh in Fatorda and Mormugao. However, the AICC representatives for Goa who are close to Sardesai want the ticket to not be given to the already confirmed candidates; so this was a last ditch effort and on their insistence I signed.”
While Digambar Kamat and Subash Shirodkar’s closeness to Sardesai is known, what is surprising is that some as Pratapsingh Rane decided to enter the fray of lobbying for Sardesai.
The decision to retain Sankalp and MK Shaikh will prove whether the Congress party’s PM-in-waiting has a hold on the Goa election scene, since the Youth Congress president has been already denied a ticket and only the former president Sankalp Amonkar is in the race and has been recommended by Rahul Gandhi.
