Panjim: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said that panchayats cannot impose lock down in their jurisdictions.
Speaking to reporters at state secretariat, he said,”Panchayats cannot impose a lockdown. They should not do it. Those who willingly want to stay at home, they can.”
Nearly ten villages in the state have ordered five to seven days lockdown in their jurisdiction inspite of chief minister repeatedly making overtures to the people of the state to go about their business as usual, but with adequate safety and hygiene precautions.
Several panchayats like Sattari, Bicholim, Ponda sub districts have imposed lockdowns on movement and banned trade and business establishments from opening, in view of a spike in Covid-19 cases in the state.
Even some panchayats have threatened to impose fine if lockdown was violated.
