Over 200 people under the banner of Village Voice of Goa marched to the residence of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat at Margao this morning to register their protest against government patronage to the illegal project of Raheja’s at Carmona.
The villagers pointed out that the project was being given clearances in piece meal in violation to the building laws as the promoters have shown a non-existent approach road of 10 mts width.
It may be recalled that the Gram Sabha of Carmona witnessed rowdy scenes over this project that apparently has the local MLA and PWD Minister Churchill Alemao’s patronage.
One of the main opponent of the project Orlando D’Silva who is a member of the Carmona panchayat was even assaulted at the gram sabha meeting.
The bone of contention is that this multi-dwelling project has was given licenses even though it did not have the access road as shown in the plans and after the villagers protested against this, Churchill Alemao dashed a letter saying that the PWD would acquire the land required for the road.
However, this contention was struck down by the Courts, which referred the matter back to the panchayat to decide and apparently the panchayat is now giving permissions for the entire project in bits and pieces.
As the Chief Minister was not in Goa, Orlando spoke to him over the telephone and following his instructions, submitted a memorandum to this office, which the chief minister said he would look into after returning to Goa.
During his conversation with the Chief Minister, Orlando was heard pleading with the chief minister not to antagonize Congress workers by permitting this project.
