Health Minister Vishwajit Rane romped home by retaining the Valpoi Assembly constituency with a victory margin of 8,405 votes. While the Congress termed the results as credit to Rane Jr. work in the constituency, opposition BJP said the party had succeeded in retaining its base.
The results came within an hour of the counting process beginning on Thursday morning with Rane polling 11,642 votes against the BJP’s Santosh Haldankar’s 3,237 thereby giving Rane 78.24 per cent of the total votes cast.
Reacting to the results, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said it was the result of Vishwajit’s work in the constituency as he tried to bring about a change through development and also a result of his father Pratapsing Rane’s work in the taluka over the last so many years.
“People have reposed faith in Vishwajit’s work and I congratulate them for recognizing a person who wants to change the constituency through development,” he said.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar while conceding that his party expected to perform better, pointed out that the BJP had managed to retain its voter base. “We have polled nearly the same percentage of votes as we did at the Lok Sabha elections,” he said.
Replying to a question, he however, attributed Vishwajit’s strong showing to money power and also intimidation. “Vishwajit had earlier said he would sit in Panjim and contest the elections. Then why did he have to camp in Valpoi?” he asked.
