Social worker Mangala Wagle from Canacona and environmentalist Clinton Vaz from Benaulim have been named jointly for the 2010 Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award. Instituted in 1989, the Verodiano award seeks to promote well being of mankind.
Mangala Wagle a resident of Palolem has been selected for the award for going out of her way to help street children from Canacona market to find a place in the sun for them. Rather than remaining a mute spectator to the acrimonious scenes in the Canacona fish market where the fish mongers would abuse the street children who used to steal their fish, Mangala set up a school for these children so that they could get their right to education.
Today the school named Hamara School has nearly 100 students enrolled in it and the children come from the labour class that is mostly found working on the various construction sites around Canacona.
Clinton Vaz on the other hand, gave up his career in engineering to take up environmental causes. He is acknowledged as Goa’s most knowledgeable person on garbage management and is the consultant for Betalbatim Village Panchayat in their novel scheme for managing management in the village.
Clinton has travelled extensively not only in India but outside the country too to create awareness on garbage management. Having assisted the City Corporation of Panjim in dealing with their garbage problem, Clinton is now offering consultancy service to various other organizations.
