Wanchoo to be Goa’s new Governor

Former chief of the Special Protection Group (SPG) Bharat Vir Wanchoo, will be the new governor of Goa. Wanchoo’s name was cleared by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and his name was communicated to chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

The Goa Chief Minister’s office confirmed that Parrikar had received the communication of appointment of Wanchoo, the former joint director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), as the new state governor.

Wanchoo will relieve K Shankaranarayanan, Governor of Maharashtra, who holds additional charge of Goa since September 2011. Shankaranarayanan was given the charge after the transfer of S S Sidhu who was Goa governor for over three years. Wanchoo’s name was doing the rounds for the gubernatorial post over the last few days.

An IPS officer of the 1976 batch, Wanchoo was joint director with IB when he was picked by the UPA government to head the SPG in 2004. He retired as SPG chief in October 2011, after heading the elite unit for over seven years.
