Kolkata: Uttarpara assembly constituency in Hooghly district this time will see high-voltage fight as Tollywood actor Kanchan Mullick, who recently joined the Trinamool Congress, is pitted against MLA-cum-senior journalist Prabir Ghoshal, who recently joined the BJP from TMC, and CPI (M) candidate Rajat Banerjee.
In 2016, then TMC candidate Prabir Ghosal won the seat by defeating Prof. Dr.Srutinath Praharaj from Communist Party Of India (marxist) with a margin of 12000 votes.
In 2011, TMC candidate singer Anup Ghosal won the seat by defeating Prof. Dr.Srutinath Praharaj from Communist Party Of India (marxist) with a margin of 43193 votes.
Uttarpara Assembly constituency is falling under Srerampur Lok sabha constituency. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress candidate Kalyan Banerjee won from Srerampur Lok Sabha (MP) Seat with the margin of 98536 votes by defeating Debjit Sarkar from Bharatiya Janata Party.
Best known for his popular TV show Janata Express, popular comic actor in Bengal Mallick has worked in movies like Mahakaal and Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbona. He is also a Bengali theatre artist. Mallick has worked in the theatre group Swapnasandhani.
‘Janata Express’ made actor Mallick a household name almost overnight. Riding on Mallick’s popularity, the TMC is all set to build pressure on the saffron camp’s candidate.
“After May 2, the defectors will line up in front of the Trinamool Bhaban,” challenged Trinamool star candidate
Kanchan remarked, “I did not come at the time of happiness, I came at the time of war. So for those who call me an outsider, those who are skeptical of what I can do for the area, I will say one thing to them, I am thin on the outside, superintendent of police in the inside. ”
Incidentally, many of the locals were disappointed with Kanchan Mallick’s candidature.
“From the day Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced my name as a candidate from Uttarpara Assembly constituency, whether it has been public or whispered, my name has been ‘outsider’,” said Kanchan.
The Trinamool star candidate also said, “How can I call myself an outsider, where Hon’ble MP from Uttarpara Kalyan Banerjee has opened the door of his house and invited me to stay here. This is called spirituality. And that is what I want to get from the people of Uttarpara.
On the other hand, Ghoshal had contested and won the polls on TMC ticket. However, complaining against the internal feuds within the party during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and sensing no renomination in the 2021 Assembly election, he quit the TMC and joined hands with the BJP.
There are allegedly three factions among the Hooghly district TMC leaders, so fielding Mullick from Uttarpara is a strategic step by the TMC to handle the factional feud in the district.
