Will write to PM on Mhadei water dispute: Goa CM

Panaji, Dec 27 (GCCurrentAffairs) Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday said that he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention into Mhadei water sharing dispute with Karnataka and even appeal against Union Minister for Environment and Forest Prakash Javadekar for indirectly giving nod for water diversion project in the southern state.

Responding to questions during a press conference held at State Secretariat, the Chief Minister said, ‘If need to go against MoEF (arises), we are ready to. I am meeting with Advocate General and the Water Resources Department officials today to decide further course of action. We will also write to PM.”

The Chief Minister said that the state government would not compromise on the issue. Criticising Congress, he said Congress should teach the government what it should do.

He said Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat should tell the people what he had done on the issue during his tenure from 2007 to 2012.

To a question, the Chief Minister said government could not give time-frame by which the matter would be resolved as it was in the Supreme Court.

However, the Chief Minister dodged a question about State Governor Satya Pal Malik’s comments on the issue. The Governor had said that the letter of Mr Javadekar to Karnataka Home Minister Basvaraj Bommai was open to misinterpretation and the escalation of tension between the two states on Mhadei water dispute was delayed due the assembly by-elections in Karnataka.
