Even as the inauguration of the Wockhardt Hospital at Panzorconi, Cuncolim was held amidst tight police security, the management publicly promised to resolve the woes of 24 employees of the hospital who were sacked by the previous management.
It may be recalled that 24 employees of the NUSI hospital at Panzorconi have been agitating for the last nearly 18 months after they were summarily dismissed from service by the then management.
The issue of these employees rankled even as India’s famous chain of health care providers Wockhardt were negotiating to take over this hospital and as a mark of solidarity with the aggrieved workers, local MLA and Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao along with the Cuncolim Municipal Council boycotted the formal inaugural function held to announce Wockhardt’s taking over the hospital.
However, Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao who was the guest of honour appealed to the new management to look into the issue of the 24 agitating workers, who incidentally were peacefully demonstrating outside the premises.
Wockhardt Chairman Dr. Habil Khorakiwala in his address disclosed that the issue was under study and promised to resolve it on a priority basis which evoked an immediate thanks from Chief Minister Digambar Kamat who was the Chief Guest.
It would be pertinent to point out that the National Union of Seafarers of India had initially started the hospital at Panzorconi under its own management. Subsequently, it tied up with the Apollo group but the relationship soured with Apollo breaking away and setting up another hospital at Margao with Victor Albuquerque of the erstwhile Alcon Group.
