Saritsa Foundation in association with India Meteorological Department and Goa State Disaster Management cell conducted one day workshop on monsoon awareness and preparedness for disasters for Goa’s coastal communities at International Centre, Dona Paula on Friday.
The workshop dealt with disasters which commonly affect coastal people such as floods, rise in the sea-level, tsunamis, cyclones, earthquakes and climate change.
The campaign aimed at raising awareness and imparting education to fishermen, rural youth, women, and village representatives through practical training with innovative use of local resources to respond to disasters and adapt to climatic changes.
The workshop focused at spreading awareness about the types of early warnings by meteorological centers as well as integration of local warning systems, integrate local authorities of districts, talukas and village panchayats with community initiatives.
Various sessions on earthquakes, tsunami, sea-level rise, practical training, mock drills, floods, forecasting of monsoon warning and explanation of terminologies were also conducted on the occasion.
