Five cars were fully gutted in an inferno on Sunday afternoon during a gathering at Farmagudi in Ponda taluka. The Ponda fire personnel who extinguished the fire have estimated the loss at Rs 25 lakh. However, no casualties have been reported in the blaze.
Fire fighters attached to Ponda central fire station, after dousing the fire, have revealed that the fire broke out during a Muslim community gathering held near Goa Engineering College (GEC) at Farmagudi.
Fire personnel suspect that someone could have thrown a burning cigarette on the dried grass in the parking lot that could have lighted the fire. The raging fire has gutted five cars parked in the lot. The gutted cars were a Bolero, an Omni Van, a Zen, a Maruti SX 4 and a Matiz.
Ponda fire station officer Rahul Desai said that they rushed to the site following information received by a phone call at around 4.40pm. When they reached the site, five cars were fully gutted. However, the fire fighters saved property worth over Rs one crore. The fire broke out at around 3.30pm. When the incident took place, over 500 cars and 10 to 15 buses were parked in the lot, Desai said.
Desai also pointed out that the function was attended by over seven thousand people and such a huge function needed permission from the fire force. “If the organizers had intimated them about the function, they could have made security arrangements which could have minimized the loss. However, they failed to seek permission from them and resulted in huge losses,” Desai said.
Ponda central fire station has registered a case of fire. Ponda police also have conducted panchanama of the scene.
