Youth for Goa receives Appreciation Award from EC

Youth For Goa (YFG) received an Appreciation Award in New Delhi from the Election Commission of India, for their contribution to citizens participation in the Goa State Legislative Assembly general elections of 2012.

On behalf of the team of Youth For Goa, Malisa Simoes (Convener, YFG) , Gaurang Panandiker (Secretary, YFG), Neha Shirodkar (Treasurer, YFG) and Akhil Parrikar (Member, YFG) received the prestigious award from Dr. S. Y. Qureshi, Chief Election Commissioner of India, V. S. Sampath , Election Commissioner of India and H. A. Brahma, Election Commissioner of India.

Youth For Goa dedicated this appreciation award to Late Mathany Saldanha for being their inspiration. Youth For Goa pledged to work towards fulfilling the dreams of Late Saldanha and will continue to do good no matter who is watching, as advised by Late Saldanha.

While a number of other partner agencies and individuals were felicitated at the function, Youth For Goa is the only NGO in India to receive this recognition from the Election Commission of India.

While thanking all their supporters, special mention was made by YFG of the support extended by Narayan Navti, Joint Chief Electoral Officer, Goa; Dr Durga Prasad Yagnamurthy;  Madhav Borkar, Asst. Station Director, All India Radio, Panaji-Goa; the Private Bus Owners Association, Goa; the Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited, Goa; Lotus Films and T.V Production; and the various educational institutions of Goa and the people of Goa at large for their whole hearted support in its acceptance speech.

Youth For Goa worked in 3 phases in order  to increase the participation of the electorate, youth in particular, in the recently concluded State Legislative Assembly elections. In the first phase, they created awareness about the Nodal Officers appointed by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Goa in the different colleges to enable the first-time youth voters to enroll themselves. In the second phase, they visited colleges and gave a short presentation to the students about the importance of voting and how each vote counts. In the final phase, they printed posters and stickers with slogans encouraging voting and created a buzz about voter participation among the voters prior to the polling day.
