Former MLA Matanhy Saldanha while accusing the government of negligence and callousness has urged it to take the recent fire at Zuari Industries Limited as a wake up call to fulfill its responsibility towards protecting property and lives of people.
He said that lives of people are being sacrificed for “so called” development and progress and accused the government of not being bothered about safety.
He said Goa’s most densely populated Mormugao taluka was sitting on tinder box given the oil tank farm there and the underground pipes supplying highly volatile fuel to the various industries in the taluka.
“In addition to the existing underground pipes, the Gas Authority of India Limited is laying another pipeline that will supply yet another volatile fuel in the area thereby making the whole taluka highly dangerous as explosions of the kind at ZIL can happen anytime,” he said.
Matanhy said the fire at ZIL earlier this week exposed the authorities unpreparedness to deal with such situation and alleged that the so called disaster management plans are only on paper and cannot be enforced as was seen at Zuarinagar.
He also demanded an enquiry into the incident of fire at ZIL and called upon the government to take stringent action against those responsible for it.
