Panaji, Mar 20 (GCCurrentAffairs) In view of Coronavirus scare, State Election Commissioner (SEC) R K Srivastava
on Friday announced thag elections to the 50 Zilla Panchayat seats in Goa had been cancelled and new dates would announced soon.
Speaking to reporters in the city, he said,”The elections have been cancelled. Fresh dates will be announced.”
The elections were scheduled to be held on March 22, 2020. Chief Minster Pramod Sawant earlier in the day had announced that the elections would be held on March 24, 2020.
The decision by the SEC came on a day when Goa bench of Bombay High Court also directed the election authorities to reconsider holding the polls on March 24.
In the past few days, BJP government in the state has faced severe criticism from the opposition
parties as well as civil society.
The state government has also postponed the Board examinations of Class X and XII and annual exams for Class IX and XI in view of Coronavirus pandemic.
However, Goa has not reported any coronavirus positive case yet.
