Depression among the people who are suffering from mental health issues is reduced with exercise. Under a study published in psychiatric research, people who were facing mental health issues exercised daily for 30 minutes, which led to the reduction of depression in them, and suicidal thoughts were washed away as well. The study was conducted by researcher Fabian De Legrand and his team on women aged between 18 and 65 years, who had tried committing suicide in the recent times.
Every one of them was asked some questions, through which, the level of the feelings of despair and hope among them were gauged. Along with the therapy going on, on a daily basis, they were asked to choose an exercise or a sedentary activity for two days. Following which, some women performed their favourite exercise for 30 minutes each for two days, while others, being alone in their rooms, read books and played games.
After this, all the participants of the study were asked to fill a form, asking them about their experience. It was then found out that depression levels fell down among the women who had opted for exercises and nothing changed among the women who had chosen to remain inside their rooms alone. Along with this, the participants found this programme to be satisfying and there were no adverse effects of the same.
This programme was also easy to be carried out. Legrand said that it was the most surprising that the patients seemed quite enthusiastic about their daily exercise time-slot, and it worked more efficiently than anti-depressants.
