IndiGo, which is Indian’s largest airline by market share and fleet size, has placed a massive order with Airbus, which is of 500 aircraft, and is also the largest order placed in the history of aviation. The order-book comprises a mix of A320NEO, A321NEO, and A321XLR aircraft. The deal was signed at the Paris Air Show, and has now overshadowed the order of 470 aircraft placed by Air India earlier.

In due course, the engine selection and the specific allocation of the ordered A320 and A321 aircraft will also be done. The delivery of these newly ordered 500 aircraft is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2029.

IndiGo CEO, Pieter Elbers, said, “It is difficult to overstate the significance of IndiGo’s new historic order for 500 Airbus A320 family aircraft. An orderbook of now almost 1000 aircraft well into the next decade, enables IndiGo to fulfill its mission to continue to boost economic growth, social cohesion, and mobility in India”.

IndiGo presently operates with a fleet of more than 310 aircraft, and the airline already had 480 aircraft on order prior to this latest acquisition. With this 500 Airbus aircraft order, IndiGo’s total orderbook has now jumped to nearly 1000 aircraft.
