For the first time in over three decades, the town of Baramulla resonated with the divine spirit of Sikh heritage as it hosted a historic Nagar Kirtan to mark the birth anniversary of the sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. The occasion was not only a celebration of a revered spiritual figure, but also a poignant revival of Sikh tradition in the Kashmir Valley, drawing thousands of devotees from across the region.

Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, renowned for his spiritual wisdom and warrior spirit, visited Kashmir in 1616 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. His visit was both a spiritual sojourn and a profound message of peace, strength, and social upliftment. During his stay, he engaged with people of diverse faiths, promoting values of courage, equality, and devotion to truth.

One of the most treasured remnants of his visit is Gurudwara Chhevin Patshahi (Chatti Patshahi), located in the heart of old Baramulla, by the tranquil banks of the River Jhelum. The sacred site commemorates the Guru’s presence in the Valley and stands as a beacon of interfaith harmony and spiritual resilience. Despite years of turmoil and migration, it continues to hold deep spiritual and emotional significance for the Sikh community of Jammu and Kashmir.

To honour this rich legacy, the Nagar Kirtan began from the historic Gurudwara Thada Sahib in the Singhpora village and culminated at Gurudwara Chhevin Patshahi, believed to be the place where Guru Sahib rested and preached during his Kashmir visit.

The procession witnessed a tremendous turnout from across the Valley — devotees arrived from Tral, Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam, and beyond. The streets of Baramulla came alive with the melodious recitation of Gurbani, as the Sangat moved with devotion and unity, embodying the very teachings of Guru Sahib.

Dr. Balwinder Singh, member of the District Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (DGPC) Baramulla, and President of Gurudwara Bhai Veer Singh Ji, Gulmarg, expressed heartfelt gratitude and joy, “The morale of the Sangat is truly uplifting. Despite a scorching heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 37°C, elders, children, and youth have participated with remarkable enthusiasm. This Nagar Kirtan will serve as a milestone in reconnecting the younger generation with our spiritual routes and heritage.”

Organized under the aegis of DGPC Baramulla, the event was a testament to community strength and spiritual devotion. DGPC President, Paramjeet Singh, extended his heartfelt thanks to the Sangat and the local administration for their unwavering support. Reflecting emotionally on the historic significance of the event, he stated, “I am truly thankful to the Almighty. In my entire life, I have never witnessed such a spiritually uplifting and grand Nagar Kirtan in Baramulla. This event will be remembered as a benchmark — a turning point — in the revival of Sikh tradition and community unity in the Valley. I earnestly pray for lasting peace in Kashmir, so that the true essence of our Valley’s diversity and brotherhood may flourish and shine before the world.”

His heartfelt words captured the spirit of the occasion and resonated deeply with those in attendance.

What made this celebration even more special was the overwhelming support from all sections of society. Local Muslims, the Indian Army, political leaders, and civil society groups came together in a heartwarming show of solidarity and respect.

Notably, the Indian Army played a crucial role in ensuring the smooth conduct of the event. Along the procession route, they set up stalls providing refreshments, water, and first aid — serving the Sadh Sangat with reverence and care. Their presence reflected a deep sense of mutual respect and unity between the armed forces and local communities.

Further reinforcing the region’s inclusive spirit, Advocate Neelofar, District President of the National Conference Baramulla, said, “We live in diversity, and Baramulla is truly blessed with a deep-rooted bond among all communities. Today, we set up a stall as a humble gesture of solidarity with our Sikh brethren.”

Her words, along with active participation by other leaders, underscored Baramulla’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony and coexistence.

Various departments — including the District Administration, Police, Health Department, and media organizations — also played pivotal roles in ensuring safety, logistics, and coverage. The seamless coordination between civil and security institutions highlighted a collective commitment to religious freedom and peaceful coexistence.

The Sikh community of Baramulla, though small in number, has displayed remarkable resilience and faith through decades of challenges. This Nagar Kirtan was a proud reflection of their cultural endurance, spiritual strength, and unwavering commitment to Gurmat values.

As the sacred hymns echoed through the town and the saffron and blue flags fluttered in the summer breeze, there was a visible air of spiritual joy, pride, and unity. More than a religious procession, this Nagar Kirtan became a powerful symbol of hope — rekindling the collective spirit of brotherhood, harmony, and shared heritage in the Kashmir Valley.

With such vibrant reawakening, the community looks forward to many more such celebrations in the years ahead nurturing peace, spiritual awakening, and cultural pride across generations.
