Canberra: The Australian government has announced an aid package for Papua New Guinea (PNG) following a deadly landslide.

The government on Monday night said it would send 2.5 million Australian dollars (1.6 million U.S. dollars) in initial aid, technical experts and emergency relief supplies to PNG to aid search, rescue and recovery efforts from the landslide.

Over 2,000 people were buried alive by the massive landslide in PNG’s remote Enga province on Friday, according to the country’s National Disaster Center.

Under the support package, Australian experts will provide assistance in incident management, geo-hazard assessments and recovery efforts with the help of the Australian Defence Force.

Shelter, hygiene kits and specific support for women and children will be provided by Australia to meet the immediate needs of local communities in the landslide area.
