Washington: The goal of former US President Joe Biden and his administration was to continue the conflict in Ukraine until the last Ukrainian, while the new authorities in the United States are openly saying that peace is necessary, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday.

US President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Wednesday for his unwillingness to hold elections, called him a “dictator,” and also suggested that the Ukrainian leader wants to keep the “gravy train” going amid the grinding conflict with Russia.

“The former administration in Washington believed in the postulate that it was necessary to continue the war to the last Ukrainian, the previous administration in Washington did not state any goals about initiating a peace process, they only talked about war and spent American taxpayers’ money on it,” Peskov told reporters.

The spokesman was asked if the Kremlin considers Trump’s criticism of Zelenskyy a proof of disagreements between Washington and Kiev.

“The new administration in Washington has a different view. They say that peace must be made as soon as possible and that it must be done through negotiation,” Peskov said.

Russia believes that the goals of the special military operation should be achieved preferably by peaceful means and via negotiations, the spokesman added.
