People in Mexico’s Chiapas are drinking cold drinks in the place of water, not only this but cold drinks have become a part of the culture here. The reason behind the same being that the rates of cold drinks here are cheaper than those of water, and as a result, people are consuming cold drinks on a daily basis. It is startling to note that during the last decade, the city’s death-rate has doubled because of this phenomenon taking place.

Students are also being taught about the negative impact of drinking cold drinks, at schools. Despite this, cold drinks are being used here as an alternative to water. Here, on an average, people drink 2 litres of cold drink daily, and up to 800 litres of cold drink in a year. As a result, from children to an old lady, everyone is consuming cold drinks in excessive amounts. The people of the city fathom the adverse effects of the same, and accept that they are now used to it. Despite this, they do not have any other option.

What is even more shocking is that cold drink is being sprinkled instead of water during religious rituals, and is also being distributed as prasad. The result is that every year in this area, around 3 thousand people are losing their lives to diabetes. Our bodies do not require sugars from external sources, with our body’s need of consuming sugars gets fulfilled with fruits, milk, etc. It is suggested that if one is used to drinking cold drinks, they should try and switch to diet drinks.
