NHRC issues notice to Gujarat government over death of seven workers in Surat

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued a notice to the Gujarat government over the reported death of seven workers in a blast at a chemical manufacturing factory in Surat.

On November 30, 2023 seven workers died and 24 were injured after a massive blast at a chemical manufacturing factory in Suraj.

In a statement here, the Commission said it has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report and issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Gujarat asking for a detailed report in the matter within four weeks.

It said, “The Commission has observed that the reported explosion requires an investigation as it has resulted in human rights violations of the victim workers”.

NHRC said, “The report should also include the status of the FIR registered by the police, medical treatment of the victims and compensation if any, granted to the next of kin of the deceased persons and the injured.”

“The Commission would also like to know about the action taken against the delinquent persons responsible for the tragedy”, said the statement.
