Srinagar: A fraudster from Uttar Pradesh who was allegedly operating a fake Twitter handle of a young Indian Police Service officer has been arrested.

The fake handle — now deactivated — had over 10,000 followers and the impersonator used to post pictures of the IPS officer on his handle and also demand money in the name of small kids.

Police said the accused, a notorious criminal, was operating the fake Twitter handle in the name of Tanushree, the police chief of Shopian district in Kashmir.

The accused was arrested from Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh.

“Notorious criminal involved in operating fake Twitter handle in the name of Tanu Shree IPS SSP Shopian and demanding money and sharing objectionable updates on Twitter has been arrested from District Pratapgarh UP with the assistance of UP Police,” a police tweet said.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Shopian Tanushree in her original twitter handle had informed the netizens that it was a fake account and it should be reported. “ ..And beware, I never ask for money for any purpose on social media,” SSP Shopian had tweeted on September 1.
