After a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Western Nepal, on Thursday, in Arunachal Pradesh, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake took place. In the last 48 hours, in Nepal, more than 3 tremors of low-magnitude earthquakes were felt. A startling finding has been made through a study at IIT Kanpur as far as the earthquakes are concerned. As per the study, a high-magnitude earthquake of 7.8 to 8.5 can hit the Himalayan states of India. Such an earthquake had taken place back in 1803.

This situation has arisen because of the tectonic plates being unstable in the Himalayan region. The team of senior professor of the civil engineering department at IIT Kanpur, Jawed N Malik, has been researching earthquakes for a long time now. Out of a total of 30.4 crore houses in the country, 95% can get affected due to earthquakes of different magnitudes.

Professor Malik has talked about a few important factors related to earthquakes, first, in two states of the Himalayan range, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, a major earthquake is possible to be witnessed, and its magnitude can be between 7.8 to 8.5. Second, India is in the cyclone zone and timeline of an earthquake, which is hinted towards because of the long period of calm in the tectonic plates of the Himalayan range.
