Less than a year is left for the General Elections of Bangladesh to be held, and with the elections being round the anvil, hate-crimes against the Hindu minority are increasing. The recent case of the same is from the Thakurgaon district of Bangladesh, adjacent to the Indian state of West Bengal. On Sunday, the case of 14 temples being desecrated here came to the fore. The temples of Lord Krishna, Goddess Lakshmi, and Goddess Kali were vandalized in the Baliadangi subdistrict of Thakurgaon.

Neem Chandra Bhowmik, President, Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, said that this incident is condemnable. He added that such incidents wherein temples are attacked by Muslim radical groups before elections, are not unprecedented. Jyoti Moy Singh, who had become a target of the attack, and is a member of the Sindurpindi Temple committee, said that they have been worshipping in the temple for the last 50 years.

As per the statistics of Bangladesh’s human rights organization, ASK, more than 3600 attacks have been made on the Hindu community and Hindu temples in Bangladesh in the last 10 years, out of which more than 1670 incidents were of vandalizing temples. This also highlights the fact how Sheikh Hasina’s government has failed in providing the Hindu community with security, and how all the government’s promises related to the same have been hollow and fake.
