Chennai: At least five people, including two staff of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) were injured after a bunch of steel rods bundled together snapped and fell off a crane engaged in Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) work near Ramapuram in the city early on Tuesday morning.

A portion of the MTC bus was badly damaged and was reduced to a mangled heap in the mishap, which occurred around 5.00 am. About five people in the bus sustained injuries and were admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

Police sources said the MTC bus was transporting drivers and conductors for duty from Kundrathur to the MTC depot in Alandur, when the accident occurred.

The steel rods, about 30 metres in length, were bundled as a pack and brought in a truck to the CMRL site in Ramapuram. When the crane lifted the bundle, a cable snapped and the rods fell on the MTC bus which was plying on the Mount-Poonamalee
road.
