Moscow: The European Union is preparing responses to US tariffs but is still trying to dissuade President Donald Trump from taking the step, French President Emmanuel Macron said.

“We must be ready if the United States introduces tariffs on European goods, as it has just done with Canada and Mexico. This decision is unclear for both our and the US economy and will have consequences for some of our industries. It will not go unanswered by us either. While we prepare responses with our European partners, we continue to do everything possible to convince the US president,” Macron said in a speech broadcast by BFMTV.

In February, Trump said that his administration will be very soon announcing new 25% tariffs on imports from the European Union, including on automobiles.

On Tuesday, the US imposed 25% tariffs on all imports coming from Canada and Mexico as well as an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Mexico and Canada threatened the US with response tariffs. US President Donald Trump said the tariffs will enter into force without any exceptions and that “there are no opportunities left” for Mexico or Canada to avoid them.
