Washington: The updated placenames “Gulf of America” and “Mount McKinley” will appear on Google Maps in the United States when the country’s Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is updated accordingly.

“We’ve received a few questions about naming within Google Maps. We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” the company said on X.

For the United States, this is when GNIS is updated, it said.

“When that happens, we will update Google Maps in the U.S. quickly to show Mount McKinley and Gulf of America,” Google said.

According to the company, when official names differ between countries, users of the service see their official local name, and in the rest of the world sees both names.

Earlier, the new US President Donald Trump signed an executive order ordering the process of renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America — according to the document, the US Secretary of the Interior must take all necessary actions to rename it within 30 days. Trump announced this intention even before the inauguration, emphasizing that this step will be part of the new policy of his administration.

Trump also previously announced that Mount Denali in Alaska would soon be renamed to Mount McKinley
