The dream of Indian students receiving higher education in Britain is getting shattered. With the increasing inflation, the threat of dropping out is augmenting among 1/4th of the 4.5 lakh Indian students living in the country. Around 1.27 lakh of the students had reached Britain the last year only. Many Indian students are not even having two square meals per day. Many Indian students belonging in the middle class, who had reached Britain with the help of monetary loans, said that eating twice a day has become difficult.
Therefore, they have now turned towards a one-time ‘big meal’. After September 2022, 33% of the students who belong in the middle class are eating food only once a day, and 63% of the students are cutting down on the shopping of food and other necessary items. It has been revealed in a recent survey that many Indian students are leaving their college and university classes and are doing part-time jobs. In many cases, even the maintenance loans provided by the universities are proving not to be enough.
43% of the students have also cut down on their electricity and gas bills, while 47% of them have stopped travelling and going out. More than half of the students are asking for money from their families, and the survey has also revealed that the middle-class students had thought of doing part-time jobs to cover their daily expenses but even that is proving to be insufficient.
