Chennai: In a protest to the covering of Bharat Mata statue at the Issaki Amman temple at Kanyakumari, Indu Makkal Katchi plans to distribute Bharat Mata posters and miniature statues to people living in Kanyakumari.

Speaking to GoaChronicle, Arjun Sampath, President, Indu Makkal Katchi said, “Bharat Mata is our mother. It is unfortunate that people from Christian groups with vested interests are targeting our nationalist beliefs. Every Indian must worship Bharat Mata. Along with the BJP leaders in TN, we have have raised this issue with the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and we hope that the statue is uncovered tomorrow.”

In order to educate and inform people of the importance of Bharat Mata, we will be distributing posters and miniature statues of Bharat Mata, Sampath further elucidated.

The Bharat Mata statue stands on the premises of Issaki Amman temple, which is 200 years old. The land is a private property and the owner installed a statue and adorned it with a tri-colour saree. They are worshipping her along with the villagers.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Baskaran acting on the order of the Revenue Department ordered his officers to cover the statue.

The compliant was filed by a villager reportedly egged on the Christian groups in the village.

In his petition to the district collector, T Muthukumar, owner of the Temple, said, “The statue was on our Patta land without affecting public peace or law and order. It did not create any communal clashes. My ancestors built the temple, and we have been maintaining the same for generations.”

  1. Indu Makkal Katchi clearly wishes to capitalise on the disturbed situation. This is a local issue and let it be handled locally.
