Panaji: BJP Spokesperson Savio Rodrigues on Friday appealed to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to ensure municipalities and panchayats in the state provide basic safety-wear of gloves and boots to workers who collect garbage.

“It my earnest appeal to Dr Pramod Sawant to ensure municipalities and panchayats provide safety-wear like gloves and boots to garbage workers collecting garbage. It is inhumane for us not to care about their well-being when they are doing an important service to society,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, in a post on social media, he raised the issue of workers collecting garbage at Margao in South Goa who did not have any safety-gear of gloves or boots on.

The workers were collecting garbage for Margao Municipality.

In a scathing tweet raising a question to council members of Margao Municipality, Rodrigues said, “I cannot understand the reason behind the failure of municipal corporations not providing gloves to workers collecting garbage. This morning witnessed Margao Municipality garbage truck collecting garbage in Margao but waste collectors not wearing gloves. Can we be considerate?”
