Govt. Firm on NH Alignment, Opponents Threaten Stir

Talks between the government and National Highway Diversion Action Committee (NHDAC) over the alignment of the two National Highways in the State failed on Tuesday with the government deciding to stick to the present alignment and the NHDAC demanding that the National Highways be re-aligned through the hinterland.
The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and also attended by PWD Minister Churchill Alemao failed to resolve the stand off with the government arguing that the number of demolitions due to widening of the two highways passing through Goa, were brought down from 569 to 168.

River Princess’ Fate to Be Decided Today

The Goa State Disaster Management Committee will today decide which company will remove River Princess from Candolim where it has been lying for nearly a decade now.
The Committee has shortlisted four companies as their technical bids met the scrutiny and their financial bids will be opened on 10th November to decide who will remove the vessel.
The four bids shortlisted are: titan Maritime (Sea) Pvt. Ltd from Singapore, Goa based Madgavkar Salvage’s joint bid with Smith Salvage from Singapore, Resolve Salvage & Fire Europe Ltd. from United Kingdom and Arihant Ship Breakers.

Musical Chairs at Margao Municipal Council Too

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat followed the route adopted by his ministerial colleagues the Alemao brothers in resorting to the rotation system of top posts of the Margao Municipal Council.
While he nominated Sushila Naik to be the chairperson of the Margao Municipal Council, the vice-chairperson will be Gonzaco Rebello from Vijai Sardessai’s camp. However, the duo will hold office for 18 months only i.e. till the next assembly elections following which the posts will be rotated between the other councillors with a term on one year only.

GPL T20 To Begin On 23rd December

This season, two new teams will join the Goa Premier League T-20 tournament scheduled to commence from 23rd December disclosed Goa Cricket Association President Dayanand Narvekar.
The tournament organized by GCA will be held in the indoor cricket Academy’s ground at Porvorim and is scheduled to end on 8th January.
Narvekar further informed that each franchise of these eight teams will be giving 5 lakh to GCA as registration fee per year to make the league a profitable event.

Russians Charters From Moscow No More

Charter business to Goa will take a major hit on account of the new circular released by the Russian Government in a bid to give a fillip to its national carrier Aeroflot. Nordwind Airlines and Vim Avia – two of most prominent charter airline operators; operating close to over 60 flights each into Goa from Moscow have been asked to discontinue their operations to Goa.
While the circular had been issued in the first week of October this year, the order has come into effect from 4th November, 2010; this at a time when tourism business into Goa from Russia has just started to flow in and charter flights were to arrive.

National School Games To Be Held In Goa

Goa will host the National School Games which will be held from 10th to 14th November at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda. The events mainly will be U-17 girls football, U-19 boys and girls baseball and chess for U-14 boys and girls, U-17 boys and girls, and U-19 boys and girls, under the auspices of the Schools Games Federation of India.
Addressing media persons on Monday, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat informed that most of the states and union territories will be participating with Goa having strong teams in football, baseball and chess.
