20 injured as Typhoon Lan passes through central Japan

Osaka: Over 20 people have been injured in gusts of wind and torrential rains in five Japanese prefectures, where Typhoon Lan is passing through, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported on Tuesday, citing local authorities.

The media said that seven people were injured in Hyogo Prefecture, five in Osaka Prefecture, three each in Kyoto and Wakayama Prefectures, and two in Shiga Prefecture.

More than 80,000 households in central Japan have been cut off from power due to the typhoon, the broadcaster said in a separate report.

While light rain continues in the city of Osaka, wind gusts there have weakened considerably, a Sputnik correspondent reported. Meteorologists warn that torrential rains will continue in the region until Wednesday noon. Specialists also say that the risk of flooding and landslides remains.

Earlier on Tuesday, Japanese authorities issued additional evacuation advisories in the prefectures of Aichi, Nara, Kyoto, Wakayama, Tokushima and Mie, bringing the total number of people advised to evacuate to 559,759.

Typhoon Lan is currently advancing through Osaka Bay towards the city of Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture. Winds at the center of the typhoon are reaching 30 meters per second (67 mph), with gusts up to 40 meters per second.
