On Monday Twitter launched Spaces where in people can join and have real-time audio conversations. The testing for spaces started in November 2020 with a few users only. After Clubhouse, another audio streaming platform came into everybody’s attention, audio lives have rather gained a lot of popularity.
For accounts with over 600 or more followers would have the ability to host a Space.
now, everyone with 600 or more followers can host a Space.
based on what we've learned, these accounts are likely to have a good experience hosting because of their existing audience. before bringing the ability to create a Space to everyone, we’re focused on a few things. 🧵

How can you use spaces?
On IOS and Android on the top of your timeline when users you follow start speaking up on spaces hosted by them, a purple bubble will appear for as long as the host is speaking, after joining space as a listener the user can tweet, read pinned tweets, react with emoji’s or even request to speak.
Joining a space as a speaker the user can pin a tweet to space, turn on captions so people could follow along, and tweet the same to let more followers know and join the same. The user who will create a space will be in control of who’s speaking and can decide the topic.
Ticketed Spaces?
Ticketed spaces are a way for Twitter to monetize this service where the hosts will be able to set ticket prices for people wanting to join. A limited group will be able to host a ticketed space in the coming few months.

Currently, anyone using Android and IOS can join a space but only individuals with more than 600 followers would be able to host it.
Also, accounts that are protected will not be able to create a space but they can join as well as speak in other’s spaces. Maximum 11 users have the option of speaking up. When a user is ready to speak they can tap on ‘start your space to turn their mic on’.
Safety for users hosting and participating: Twitter has built safety controls on spaces for the host and speakers. A host will be able to mute speakers and take away their mic or remove them from space in case required. Twitter assures that it is the most important aspect where users feel that Spaces is a safety feature added to twitter for live audio conversations. Users can freely block and report a space or users in case of any violation.
we created Spaces to bring people together in an intimate way to share thoughts and tweets with the power that only the human voice can bring. Spaces is now available to millions of people but the work is not finished bc it is part of a bigger vision built with you, our community

What about the data that is retained after the live audio conversation by spaces?
The audio would not be available publicly after space has ended however Twitter keeps copies of the audios for 30 days from any space and captions if turned on. According to Twitter, the copies are retained in case there is a need to review them for violations of Twitter rules. If any violation is found while hosting or participating in space then the copies are retained by Twitter of the audio and are kept for longer which is 90 days to allow people to appeal if they feel a mistake has been made.
Hosts can also download a copy of their space (audio conversation) data for as long as twitter retains a copy of it. Speakers can also download a copy of the transcription of what was said as well.

Monetization of Spaces (Ticketed Spaces)
Spaces could help musicians, stand-up comedians, and many more artists promote themselves. After twitter introduced spaces in December 2020 for IOS users and has now been expanded to Android users. Musicians like Taylor Swift, Nick Jonas, 5 seconds of summer were among the first ones to use Spaces to promote their albums and to host an after-party for the Grammys on a space. Twitter said that the celebrities would keep the maximum of the revenue and only a small portion will be taken by Twitter. In the coming days users would see updates where they will be able to co-host as well as set up reminders.
Indian home-grown live audio application: ‘Fireside’ launched by the owner of Chingari has been quite popular as well ever since the lockdown. Fireside is an empowering social media platform wherein users can connect with like-minded people which would lead people to share ideas and create innovations, benefitting ones personal as well as professional life.
