Netflix unveils ‘Kurukshetra’: An animated epic reimagining the Mahabharata

New Delhi: In a landmark move that celebrates India’s timeless storytelling traditions, Netflix has announced the premiere of ‘Kurukshetra’, a bold new animated series that reinterprets the Mahabharata for modern audiences.

The ambitious project is set to bring the legendary battle of Kurukshetra to life through high-quality animation, blending traditional storytelling with cutting-edge visuals.

Produced in collaboration with top Indian animation studios, ‘Kurukshetra’ aims to captivate audiences both in India and globally by presenting age-old mythology through a modern lens.

According to Netflix, the series will focus on the central themes of dharma (duty), power, and destiny, while delving into the complex moral dilemmas faced by iconic characters such as Arjuna, Krishna, and Duryodhana.

Set to debut on October 1, the series marks Netflix India’s first foray into mythological anime and promises an immersive, emotionally charged retelling of one of the world’s greatest epics.

Conceptualised and created by Anu Sikka, Kurukshetra is a Tipping Point production, produced by Alok Jain, Anu Sikka, and Ajit Andhare.

The series is written and directed by Ujaan Ganguly, with legendary poet and lyricist Gulzar lending his voice to the project as the official lyricist, bringing poetic depth and cultural gravitas to the narrative.

The series will be released in two parts of nine episodes each, offering audiences a richly layered experience that blends ancient wisdom with modern storytelling.

“Kurukshetra is the first mythological anime from Netflix India and a truly novel take on the Mahabharata,” said Tanya Bami, Series Head, Netflix India.

“It brings together everything we look for in great storytelling, layered characters, emotional depth, and universal themes. This series reimagines a story we’ve all grown up with in a format that feels fresh and relevant to today’s generation,” she added.

Creator Anu Sikka added, “The battle of Kurukshetra is a collision of duty, destiny, and moral choices. We explore this through distinct perspectives, blending timeless wisdom with the power of visual storytelling. We’re honoured to bring this layered narrative to life on Netflix.”

With Kurukshetra, Netflix strengthens its commitment to original Indian content and breaks new ground in the animated mythology genre, delivering a story as relevant today as it was centuries ago.

Kurukshetra premieres October 10, exclusively on Netflix.
