Indonesia’s president, presidential candidates vote in elections

Jakarta: Indonesian President Joko Widodo cast his vote at the Gambir polling station in Jakarta Wednesday morning along with his wife, Iriana Joko Widodo.

The two showed their purple fingers to the press, indicating that they have completed their voting.

“This is a democratic party that we hope will become the people’s party. We also hope that the elections will be conducted fairly and honestly and that all Indonesians would be happy to attend,” said the president after voting.

Three presidential candidates have also voted at polling stations closest to their respective homes.

Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan voted at the Lebak Bulus polling station in South Jakarta with his family, while candidate Prabowo Subianto cast his vote in Hambalang, West Java.

Meanwhile, candidate Ganjar Pranowo, exercised his voting right at a polling station in Semarang, Central Java, with his wife and son.

After voting, all the three presidential candidates showed their purple fingers while smiling.

More than 204 million registered voters from 38 provinces will cast ballots in the general elections to choose president and vice president, as well as members of national and regional parliaments.

According to the General Elections Commission (KPU) Chairman Hasyim Asy’ari, the half-day voting kicked off at 7:00 a.m. and will end at 1:00 p.m. successively in Indonesia’s eastern, central, and western time zones.

Voting started late at some polling stations due to weather and technical reasons.
