Manila: Some 255,000 people have been evacuated from the Bicol region in the Philippines due to Typhoon Man-Yi (known as Pepito in the Philippines), which is the 6th major storm that hit the country in the past month, the PhilStar newspaper reported on Saturday, citing local authorities.
The typhoon is expected to hit the Catanduanes island in the Bicol region later on Saturday or on Sunday, and the maximum wind speed has already reached 215 kilometers per hour (133 miles per hour), according to PhilStar.
Thousands of people living in the most vulnerable areas had to flee their homes due to threats of landslides, floods and storm waves, the newspaper said.
Man-Yi is the sixth typhoon the Philippines is facing in the past month. Earlier this week, thousands of people were evacuated from the coastal area of Luzon Island in northern Philippines due to Typhoon Usagi.
In late October, at least 145 people were killed after Tropical Storm Trami and Super Typhoon Kong-rey barreled through the Philippines.
The number of people affected by extreme weather conditions across the country exceeded 7 million.
In early November, typhoons Yinxing and Toraji hit the Philippines, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people.
