Agartala: Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) has assured the Supreme Court of India that the forthcoming Village Council elections will be completed, including the announcement of results, by the end of June this year.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday addressed two significant matters regarding the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC), the postponed Village Council elections and outstanding financial bills awaiting action from the state government.
The case concerning the long-overdue Village Council elections was brought forth by Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, founder of TIPRA Motha and a member of the royal family.
The issue was heard by a bench comprising Justice Manoj Mishra and Justice Manmohan. In relation to the elections, the SEC presented an affidavit detailing the proposed schedule.
The Supreme Court accepted the timeline and acknowledged that the elections would be conducted under its supervision. The Court has set the next hearing for May 20.
In a different matter regarding the pending ADC bills with the state government, the Supreme Court has accepted a writ petition submitted by ADC.
Notices to the relevant parties are anticipated to be issued in due course. Expressing his approval of the development, Pradyot stated that the Village Council elections will take place in June after nearly ten years after intervention of the Supreme Court for providing long-awaited justice to the tribal community.
