Walking is beneficial for our health but it is interesting to know that what is more beneficial is walking backwards. Walking backwards burns 40% more calories. We are able to walk because of a synchronization between different systems of our body, and when we walk backwards, the brain takes more time and has to work harder in order to strike the balance between all those systems.

In a recent study, it has been found out that walking backwards improves the body’s balance and stability, and it is also beneficial for people who are suffering from knee-pain. In walking backwards, we take smaller steps, which results in lesser pressure on the leg joints, and the muscles of the lower parts of the legs get strengthened. And when the inclination of the body changes, one gets relief from ankle-pain.

In walking backwards, the muscles which support the backbone are used more, which helps in reducing lower-back pain, it is also beneficial to correct the disturbed balance of the body. Once someone practices walking backwards fully, running backwards can prove to be even more beneficial for the body, which strengthens the muscles which provide strength to the knees.
