Washington: US airstrikes on the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, or ISIS, banned in Russia) positions in central Syria were successful and resulted in killing of a number of terrorists, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said.

On Sunday, the US Central Command said that its forces carried out dozens of airstrikes targeting ISIS camps and operatives in central Syria to prevent the terrorist group from taking advantage of the current instability in the country.

“Our initial assessment is that they were successful and that, you know, we did kill a number of operatives, ISIS operatives in the desert. But it’s going to take some time to get you more fidelity on the strikes,” Singh told reporters on Wednesday.

Syrian armed opposition captured the capital of Damascus on Sunday. Russian officials have said that Syrian President Bashar Assad stepped down as president after holding negotiations with participants of the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum.

Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister on Tuesday.
