Chennai: Legislators of the main Opposition AIADMK, who were suspended from participating in the Tamil Nadu Assembly proceedings for the rest of the session, on Thursday began a day long fast demanding a CBI probe into the Kallakurichi spurious liquor tragedy that has claimed 63 lives.
All the 61 MLAs led by Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami participated in the fast at the Rajarathinam stadium in Egmore.
Senior party leaders and functionaries from the neighbouring district also took part in the fast.
Police, which had granted permission for the fast with certain conditions, have made elaborate security arrangements.
Earlier, the AIADMK planned to hold the fast near Valluvar Kottam, but police granted them permission for it at the Egmore stadium citing traffic constraints.
The MLAs, clad in black shirts, demanded that the probe into the tragedy should be handed over to the CBI and also sought the resignation of the Chief Minister for failing to control the illicit liquor sale in the State.
The AIADMK had earlier staged a state-wide demonstration and also petitioned the Governor seeking a CBI probe into the incident.

After they were evicted and suspended for one day on Tuesday for creating ruckus over the issue, yesterday, they again disrupted the proceedings, following which they were evicted and suspended for the rest of the session, that would continue till June 29.
