Assam flood: Death toll rose to 14, over 6 lakh still affected

Guwahati: A total of 19 districts in Assam are still reeling under flood affecting 6,78,877 people including women and children even as the flood related death toll have rose to 14.

Apart from the flood related death, five persons have died due to landslide last month in Assam’s capital town Guwahati as incessant rainfall had triggered rainfall in different areas of Guwahati.

A flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority on Thursday said that a total of 1474 villages in 63 revenue circles have remained affected by the floods.

The government has opened 190 relief camps to house and shelter the flood victims in different flood hit districts and 215 relief distribution centres to ensure that the flood affected people get the required food grains and other basic items.

“Two persons died due to flooding in the last 24 hours including one in Nagaon and another in Cachar districts,” said an official of the ASDMA adding that 41,000 people have taken shelter in the relief camps.

“The district administrations have been put on alert and asked to render all possible help to the flood hit people,” he said.
