Mangaluru: The Congress government in Karnataka will set up a special police squad to handle cases of moral policing in Dakshina Kannada, Home Minister G Parameshwara said here on Tuesday.

The decision has been taken in the wake of a lot of cases pertaining to moral policing being reported from Dakshina Kannada, especially Mangaluru, he said.

“In Dakshina Kannada, particularly in Mangaluru, a lot of so-called moral policing is happening. People are fed up with it, and some others are trying to do it in a big way. So, we would like to stop this moral policing at once and then take whatever steps are necessary so that it does not get repeated.

“We would like to create a communally harmonious atmosphere so that people live in peace. That is why today we have taken a decision to constitute a special squad to look into these matters,” he told reporters here.

Incidents of moral policing keep taking place in Dakshina Kannada. The first major moral policing incident was widely reported in Mangaluru in January 2009.
