New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday welcomed newly-appointed US Ambassador Eric Garcetti, during which they discussed the enormous progress in the bilateral ties, especially in the last decade and also exchanged views on the Quad.

In a tweet, the EAM said:

“Great to welcome Ambassador Eric Garcetti of the United States.

“Discussed the enormous progress in our relationship, especially over the last decade. Exchanged views on the recent Quad Summit.

“Confident that India-US ties will continue to grow from strength to strength.”

The meeting came as US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller, speaking on Eric Garcetti, said:

“Let me say first of all I’ve seen some of the video and other coverage of the reception Ambassador Garcetti has received in India, and we’ve been quite heartened by it.

“I will say generally that our partnership with India is one of our most consequential relationships. We work with India closely on our most vital priorities and we expect Ambassador Garcetti to be able to deepen the relationship between our countries and work on these matters of shared concern.”

He was answering a question on what would be the main mission of Ambassador Garcetti in India, after the two years delay by Washington in appointing a US ambassador to New Delhi.

On May 11, Ambassador Garcetti presented his credentials to President Droupadi Muru at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
